Google has offered an excellent IME for those who want to 'type in Urdu without tears' Let's follow the procedure step by step:
(I am giving the example in Windows XP, but it is equally applicable in Vista or Win 7)

Step 1
Install Google Transliteration IME
It is available on http://www.google.com/transliterate.
You would need to download the IME. Donot forget to choose 'Urdu' language and your operating system (32 or 64 bit).
Download and run (you may get security warning regarding file download etc depending upon your browser and security settings
Step - 2
Install Right to Left Language Support
Open Control Panel> Date, time language and region options> Region and language options
Under the Language Tab 'check' Install files for complex script and right-to-left languages
Keep Windows Installation CD handy as it will be needed now.
Apply/ Ok and after installation system would ask for reboot.
Step - 3
Installing IME and Urdu Keyboard
- Control Panel -> Regional and Language Options -> Languages tab -> Text services and input languages (Details) -> Settings Tab
- If either Urdu or Google <Language> Input not listed in Installed Services box, then click Add and in Add Input language dialog box, select Urdu in Input language and Google Urdu Input in Keyboard layout/IME. Click OK
- Press Key Settings
- In Hot keys for input languages, Select Switch to Urdu-Google Urdu Input
- Press Change Key Sequence
- Select Enable Key Sequence
- Select option like Left ALT + SHIFT + Key 1
- Apply all changes
- Now opening an application like notepad and pressing Left ALT + SHIFT + Key 1 should open the IME.
